Why isn't the Gulf the Ocean?

I mean the Mediterranean is sort of the ocean, so why not the gulf?
Scientifically, yes, the Gulf is basically the ocean. However, I don't live on the Gulf Coast: I live on the Atlantic Coast. So in my mind, the two are distinct entities, separated by an entire state of marshes and alligators, and I much prefer the ocean, thank you very much.
ReplyDeleteIt's more of a geography snob thing than anything else.
I also occasionally explain to people that LA is really not that close to SF, so I think I'm just getting bitterly defensive about different regions within a state.
